Windsor residents will have received in this past week a letter from the British Airports Authority (BAA) announcing their Night Noise Insulation Scheme.
Given that there remains much opposition to night flights, not least from RBWM, this announcement does rather suggest that substantial increases in night flights will happen regardless of public opinion.
Well, that comes as no surprise, does it?
The plan itself makes provision for a 50% subsidy to install double glazing in bedrooms or bed-sitting rooms. Secondary glazing will be provided free. The offer does not apply to living areas. Only sleeping areas.
There is no need to apply. BAA will write again and tell you when you can upgrade your home and claim sometime in the next five years. Five years???!!! Fancy waiting five years to quieten your bedrooms?
The boundary to eligible properties will be the cause of most complaint. Incredibly, St Leonards Road from the hospital to the west is excluded from the scheme, as is Maidenhead Road, Arthur Road and central Windsor as well as Clewer Village. There will certainly be properties where it will depend which side of the road you live in order to be eligible! As if aircraft noise observes such finite boundaries...
But there you go. A huge impersonal company hell-bent on growth and profit cynically instigating a scheme to sweeten the pill of night flights and a third runway for those it annoys all around the airport. Is it a coincidence that a 'consultation document' about the third runway should drop through our letter boxes a week after an 'offer' of help with bedroom soundpoofing?
The only hope we have of reducing noise pollution in Windsor is that either oil prices become so prohibitive that air travel passenger numbers start to shrink, or that the travelling public realise that there is much on their own door step to enjoy and that air travel is no longer acceptable or that global warming is a reality and that we should all walk.
Some hopes, when even the Prime Minister, who should know better, supports airport expansion.
